Course Description | This course prepares participants for all parts of the IELTS exam – the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking modules. It focuses on the skills and techniques required to sit for the test by helping them to familiarize with the various test formats and acquire test-taking strategies. The program also prepares students in taking the IELTS by discussing, practicing, and analyzing each section of the test. Students will review particular grammatical patterns that occur regularly on the IELTS and simulate actual test-taking conditions so that they become familiar with and more comfortable with test situations. | |||

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) | At the end of the course: Students will be able to employ reading strategies such as skimming and scanning, evaluation of purpose to identify main ideas and details in a wide variety of texts. Students will be able to identify implied meanings through use of voice, word choice and structure. Students will be able to summarize main ideas on writing and orally. Students will be able to identify purpose and choose appropriate language and structures for both writing and speaking. Students will be able to identify speaking tasks, and employ appropriate communication strategies. Students will be able to utilize communicative strategies to negotiate, infer, persuade and evaluate in spoken American English. Students will be able to identify rhetorical patterns, by analyzing organizational structure of a piece of writing. Students will be able to compose compare/contrast essays, argumentative essays, problem/solution essays. |

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) | At the end of the course: Students will be able to utilize critical thinking skills to infer meaning, interpret figurative language, synthesize materials and identify arguments both in listening and reading. Students will be able to recognize main ideas, supporting details, audience and purpose in an academic reading. Students will be able to compose an academic essay utilizing knowledge of various rhetorical patterns. Students will be able to employ knowledge regarding grammatical structures and forms in writing. Students will be able to utilize summarizing skills when speaking. Students will be able to utilize strategies to restate ideas. |

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) | At the end of the course: Students will be able to identify purpose, audience and tone of readings. Students will be able to distinguish major and minor ideas. Students will be able to employ reading strategies of skimming and scanning to make predictions and infer main ideas. Students will be able to identify main ideas, minor ideas and details in academic lectures. Students will be able to utilize inference strategies to identify implied meanings in conversations and lectures. Students will be able to utilize paraphrasing and summarizing skills when speaking. Students will be able to utilize strategies to restate ideas. Students will be able to compose an academic essay on a wide variety of topics, utilizing various rhetorical patterns with fluency and coherence. |

Students will be able to identify main ideas, minor ideas and details in a variety of written passages. Students will be able to utilize inferences and identify connections between sentences and the context of a written passage. Students will be able to employ reading strategies of skimming and scanning to make predictions and infer main ideas. Students will be able to employ patterns of organization in writing. Students will be able to compose argumentative essays in a variety of rhetorical modes. Students will be able to employ knowledge of advanced grammatical structures in writing clearly and fluently. |
